Actor y director de cine estadounidense. Concitó la atención en la serie de televisión Rawhide (1959–66) y sus actuaciones en tres "spaghetti westerns de Sergio Leone (1964–66) lo convirtieron en una estrella internacional. Regresó a EE.UU. para actuar en la exitosa Harry, el sucio (1971), que fue la primera de una serie de películas de acción en las que interpretaba héroes parcos y peligrosos. Dirigió y actuó en filmes como Escalofrío en la noche (1971), El jinete pálido (1985), Los imperdonables (1992, premio de la Academia), Un mundo perfecto (1993), Los puentes de Madison (1995) y Million Dollar Baby (2005, doble premio de la Academia por mejor película y director). Su afición al jazz lo llevó a dirigir y producir Bird (1988), largometraje que trata la vida de Charlie Parker. Su estilo minimalista de actuación y dirección le ha otorgado el reconocimiento de la crítica, junto con un prolongado y sostenido éxito de taquilla.
